1. New FISTF website
Hello, a quick word to say the new FISTF website has been relaunched at www.fistf.info Special thanks to Stefano Tagliaferri from Italy for his hard work. Your feedback would be more than appreciated as we try to improve the website as much as we can but everything has been rebuilt from scratch in a few days.
Follow also the latest FISTF news at http://fistfnews.blogspot.com/ You can also discuss about table football on our forum at http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=fistf

2. Grand Prix of Scotland
14 teams and 65 players took part in the Scottish Grand Prix held in Edimburgh last week-end. Eric Verhagen (TFC Mattersburg) won the Open final on a clear 5-2 against his austrian teamate Karl-Heinz Haider. Robert Lenz and Christian Blümel reached the semi-finals. In the other categories, Alexander Haas (U19) and Erich Hinkelmann were the winners. The team event was probably the most exciting category of the week-end. In the semi-final between Stella Artois Milano (Italy) and Cardiff San Siro (Wales), the Cardiff boys managed to win in the last second. Jim Law reported: "One of the highlights as already said was Cardiff against Milan, although Phil scored in the last seconds, Chris Short was 3-0 down at half-time and came back to draw 3-3. As for Hot Club ours was almost turning over Milan before they got to that stage, drawing 2-2 with a minute to go before eventually losing 2-1, my fault I'm afraid drawing 5-5. "
There is a good video fo the tournament at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7848477.stm

3. FISTF forum
FISTF is happy to announce that Mr Emmanuel Gorgette has accepted the position of forum admin. We wish him good luck.

4. Italy: Asti is the italian "Calais"
A few years ago, the small football club of Calais (France) was the amazing semi-finalist of the french Cup. The amateurs managed to beat some pro teams of the french league. History offered an exciting repeat last week when the small club of Asti (Italian Serie D) reached the semi-final of the National tournament in Vignale. At this stage of the tournament, only the european champions of Pisa managed to beat the boys of Asti (3-1). Andrea Fassio, the captain of the Asti side, reported "It doesn't matter for us if it was a very big tournament or not. This time, it was a good National Open with Pisa (not witht heir best team) and Stella Artois, two European Wup winners (even if the Torino Warriors finally won the final against Pisa, 3-0). Thanks to the luck, we played against rather good teams... but not the strongest teams. But it doesn't matter, we reached the semi-final! We are almost like the Calais! Fantastic!"

5. Italy: Super 9 tournament in Ascoli
ACS Perugia won the Super 9 tournament in Ascoli last week-end. Nastasi, Buono, Manganello and De Francesco beat ASD Bari in the final (3-1).
Bologna Tigers and Black Rose Roma were the semi-finalists.

6. Spain: new club
The spanish association is glad to welcome a new club. The new club is called "Tiburones FM" and is based in Málaga. This is another good news for the spanish association who managed to increase their number of players from 30 to 60 in a few years with 7 different clubs registered. Well done.

7. Portugal: national tournament
The national tournament of the "Uniao Recreativa Brandoense" was held last week-end. 15 players competed in the openc ategory and Ruben Portugues won the final against Nuno Noronha (2-1 sudden death). Besides the main category, there was another tournament for players who are not registered to the portuguese association. Edson Pires won the final (2-0) against Filipe Martins.

8. USA: National Open in California (by Simon Hutchinson) On Sunday 25 January we played the first American Subbuteo Association Open in the Golden state (California) in 2009. It was a very competitive affair with perhaps more closely fought games than I can remember in any previous ASA Open. Congratulations to all the competitors:
Open Winner : Wayne Smith
Runner up : David Jensen
Third : Steve Tucker
Fourth : John Carroll

Mary Jane Winner : Simon Hutchinson
Runner up : Kevin Nieman
Third : Dominic Hutchinson
Notable performances were by:
- David Jensen in reaching his first final having returned to playing Subbuteo just five months ago.
- John Carroll for beating the second seed in the group stage. Thereby, making it possible for David to reach the final.
- Dominic Hutchinson despite losing all of his games he played probably the best any of us have seen in more than one game from him.  Now only if he would practice... A full report and all of the results can be found on this page -> http://socalsubbuteo.com/competitions/asaopen200901.php

1. A sad loss for table football
We are saddened to inform you of the sudden passing of Iain Bell on Sunday 1st February 2009. Iain aged 54 years died quickly, without suffering, during a mountain bike ride on Sunday morning. His funeral service will be held on Monday 9th February at 2 pm. It will be at Roucan Loch Crematorium,
DumfriesDG1 4JF.
Iain was of the greatest guys in scottish table football. He was not only a player but also the organizer of the Dumfries club. He had organized several international tournaments. He will be missed by many of us.
There will be a minute of silence respected in his memory at the dutch Grand Prix in Utrecht this week-end.

2. Massimo Cremona wins the Grand Prix of Malta 30 players attended the Grand Prix of Malta last week-end in hamrun.
Massimo Cremona (Reggio Emilia) managed to win the title after a short victory in the final against teamate Mark Gauci. Derek Conti and Charles Quilina were the semi-finalists. Angelo Borg (U19), Emanuele Lo Cascio
(U15) and Joseph Mifsud (Veterans) were the other individual winners while Hamrun TFC beat the Italians of ASD Palermo in the team final. Full results on the FISTF website.

3. First tournament in Japan
8 players competed in the first FISTF tournament ever held in Japan. The Satellite of Yokohama attracted 8 players from japan. Yasuhiro Suzuki beat organizer Kenzou Koui (2-1) in the final to claim the title.
http://web.mac.com/koikoifulie/iWeb/SUB ... r%202.html

4. French Open in Issy
Eric Verhagen won another international title this week-end in Issy (France). The Dutchman had no mercy to beat teamate Wolfgang Leitner (2-1) in the final. Robert Lenz and Valéry Dejardin were the 2 semi-finalists.
Benjamin Garnier won the U19 trophy while Diego Tagliaferri from italy was the easy winner in the U15 tournament. Florian Giaux from Belgium won the
U12 section and claims his 2nd title in a row 3 weeks after his victory in the Open of Temploux. Kostas Kechris won the veterans section after an all-greek final against Dimitris Mavromitros (3-1). Finally, world number 1 Françoise Guyot easily won the Ladies section. In the team event, many close games were decided on goal-average. This was the case also in the final as Mattersburg (Austria) beat AS Hennuyer (Belgium) with more goals scored after a 2-2 draw.

5. World rankings of January 2009
The new rankings are updated at http://www.fistf.info/?q=node/55

6. International Open of Traiskirchen
Here is the invitation we received from Christian Blümel for the
tournament: "Dear friends, the TFC Wr. Neustadt is proud of organizing the 30th anniversary of the Baumfalkencup. It's the first International Open in Austria this year and it will take place on the weekend 2nd- 3rd of May in Traiskirchen (20km near Vienna). We are very happy that our German friends from Spreeathen, TSG Rain and Borussia Bergkamen and Rainer Vogt have already signed for the tournament. I am sure that Marco Pinausi and TLF Gorizia will also sign for the tournament like our Czech friends Uherske Hradiste.
Its good the reach by car (motorhighway A1 or A2) and also by plane. Vienna International Airport (Alitalia, AirBerlin, Flyniki,) and Airport Bratislava (Skyeurope, Ryanair).
On Saturday evening there's a BBQ like last year. Also good wines from "Thermenregion" are waiting for participants.
THANKS @ Marcus Tilgner for the homepage:

8. USA: Patapsco Cup (by Zach Walker)
Last week-end the annual Patapsco Cup was played for the 19th time. This is an annual tournament held between students at Patapsco Middle School in Ellicott City, Maryland, USA. All of these students play weekly in Paul Eyes' after school club. This tournament is a U15 event. 24 players participated in this year's event and the results were:
Patapsco Cup Semi Finals (U15):
David Marino 2 David Cranston 1
Brendan Dames 4 Adolfo Colindres 0

Final:
David Marino 2 Brendan Dames 0

David Marino gets his name on the famed Patapsco Cup for the first time after what was a great event. Also held today was the first ever Hebron Cup which will be an annual tournament played between many former Patapsco players who are now older and attend Hebron High School in Maryland. 9 players took part. This will be a U19 event for many players who move on from Patapsco, thus allowing us to try and keep them involved and playing regularly as they get older. The results were:
Hebron Semi Finals (U19):
Michael Tillman 5 Benny Nuger 1
Stuart Russell 1 Byung Kim 1 - Stuart advanced on penalties

3. A new hope for table football in Brazil FISTF is very happy to wish a warm welcome to the newly-born LBS (Liga Brasileira de Subbuteo). The new association has plans to develop the game in Brazil and in the State of Rio in particular. The Sports Director of the association, Mr Marcelo Coutinho e Santos, reports that plans are under way to introduce the game with the help Vasco da Gama and Bangu, two of the most important football clubs of the country: "Our main objective is to bring the FISTF World Championship to Rio de Janeiro in 2014, in parallel with the FIFA World Cup."
The game will be introduced with the help of the players of another table football game called "button game", which is very popular in Brazil. 16 athletes from 3 different clubs have already started working on the development of the game but no date has been decided yet for the first tournament.
The association has also launched a website at www.subbuteobrasil.blogger.com.br, which will be updated shortly.

4. A great video from Singapore
Just a quick note to say our friend Erfandy from Singapore posted a great video at http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=53461027529
The video shows the FISTF Satellite tournament held in Singapore on February 22, which was the biggest tournament ever in Asia as 15 players competed in the tournament in Singapore. 2 foreign players travelled to
Singapore: Antonio Carabillo, an Italian based in Hong Kong, and Michael Dent, a British player who lives in Kuala Lumpur.

5. Another baby in the FISTF family
FISTF would like to congratulate Darren Clark and his wife Stacey on the birth of their second daughter Phoebe. Both mother and baby are doing well.

6. FISA archives
I'm still loking for the full results of the world cup 1970 held in London.
I also search the group results of the 1974 world cup. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate. Thanks.

In almost 5 years, the newsletter has been sent to hundreds of players from more than 40 countries and has helped to have better communication between FISTF and players from around the world. The newsletter has been a brilliant help to get people together, to promote tournaments, to give support to local associations,... The recent developments in Argentina, Japan, Singapore, Cyprus, South Africa, Finland,... are a great satisfaction for FISTF but we also have some new contacts in Malaysia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil,... and we really hope the world of table football will grow in the future with more table football fans and more tournaments.

Please let me remind everyone that all contributions are welcome for the newsletter and that we are open to speak about all parts of the game, not only playing but also painting figures, the rules,... If you're interested or if youw ant more details, drop me a line.

2. Angel Valverde wins the Milton Keynes GP (by Jeremy Bradley) The Milton Keynes Grand Prix was won by Angel Valverde for a 2nd time, he defeated Massimo Cremona on sudden death shots. Two of his team mates also reached finals, Juan Carlos Granados (Veterans) lost to a Golden Goal by Fabio Belloni and Jose Ros (U19) lost 4-3 also to a Golden Goal by Bjorn Kegenbein. In the Under 15 Angelo Borg from Malta defeated Marcel Kwiatkowski from Berlin. An all Belgian final saw AS Hennyeur defeat Stembert comfortably 2-0. It was good to see the 5 category winners come from different countries. It was fantastic to receive great support from around Europe with Greece, Spain and Belgium in particular providing a lot of players. The tournament was played in good spirit with very few incidents, everyone seemed happy with the organisation, venue and pitches.
A change of venue is likely next year, in order to eliminate time restrictions and to allow catering within the playing hall. A big thank you to all those who supported the tournament, looking forward to next years tournament already!

3. Third title in a row for Zangylos (Report by Paul Andreas)
14 Players took part in sunday's Tournament in Limassol, where the atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed. 12 of the players were below 19 years of age and all belonged to Famagusta TFC. However it was "The Old Master" Giorgos Zangylos whom again played the final with his best student Marcos Kalopsidiotis, Giorgos winning by a close 3-2 score line. This is George's 3rd Title in a row on home soil and all my congratulations go to him and to Marcos for reaching his second final in a row. Nicosia's only representitve was Dimitris Parperis, whom again is showing signs of improvement, just losing out on the semi final to Marcos in extra time. The other losing semi-finalist was Neophytos Ioannides, a very young player in the game in Cyprus but seems to also be improving. The Word version of the results is available from www.FISTF.com

1. Hat trick for Carlos Flores
After years of patience, this season might be the season of glory for Carlos Flores. The spanish player of ASD Reggio Emilia his having his best time perod since the beginning of his international career. After wins in the Majors of Mattersburg in August an Mons in March, Flores managed to win his third individual title in a Major in a row. This time Carlos didn't do very well during the whole week-end. Of course he help his teamates of Reggio Emilia to win the team title on saturday (they beat the Bolgna Tigers in the final) but Flores lost some games against Valéry Dejardin and Wolfgang Leitner. Anyway, the world's number 2 proved to be even better int he individual tournament as he won all his games in a very impressive way:
4-1 vs Alain Hanotiaux in the last 16 round, 3-2 vs Alberto Apollo in the last 8, 7-3 vs teamate Mark Gauci in the semi and 2-1 vs world number 1 Eric Verhagen in the final. To be noticed that the other semi-finalist of the open tournament was Antonio Mettivieri. The Italian who lives in Belgium hasn't played much over the last few years and is now 722nd in the world ranking. Top players never die...

In the other categories, many surprises helped to make the show. Rising star Giuditta Lo Cascio won the ladies tournament whil Giacomo Monica won his 3rd title in in a Major int he veterans category. Jerrel van Keimpema proved to be the right top seed of the tournament as he had no mercy for the other competitors in the U19 section. Mitchell Timmers defeated Emanuele Lo Cascio (2-1) to win the U15 section while the young Belgians dominated the U12 tournament. Kenny De Schuyteneer beat Florian Giaux (2-0) in the final.

In general, this first Major in the Netherlands was a great tournament. The venue, the catering and the trophies were fantastic. Some smaller points have to be improved in the future but these are only details. FISTF woudl therefore congratulate Robbert Thoen, Marco De Bruin and all those who helped them for making such a nice tournament. 164 players from 12 different nations were taking part.

Full results are available from www.fistf.com Details and pictures at http://www.amsterdam-tournament.nl/

7. USA: National Open in California (by Simon Hutchinson) On Saturday 4 April the Southern California Subbuteo Club hosted their second American Subbuteo Association Open of the year.  All the players agreed that this was the most competitive Open tournament they could remember playing in.  There were many "upsets", and the top seeds had a tougher time than everyone expected.  Congratulations to all the winners:
- Open winner : Wayne Smith
- Runner up : Simon Hutchinson
- Third place : John Carroll
- Mary Jane winner : Munir Merchant
- Runner up : Steve Tucker
- Third : Kevin Nieman
Highlights were:
- Sixth seed, Munir Merchant, beating the number one and two seeds.
- Kevin Nieman in the Mary Jane semi final fighting back from 0-3 down at half time to tie the game.  Alas, he lost the shoot out.
- Simon Hutchinson fought back from 0-2 down at half time in the final, only to lose to a goal in the 12th minute.

1. Grand Prix of France in Beausoleil
47 players competed in the Grand Prix of France last week-end in Beausoleil. The level was quite high with several former world champions like Bertelli, Giulianini, Intra and former U19 champion Wlodarczyk. On saturday, the team event was full of surprises. In the semis, Pisa had to wait the last minute to beat the belgian team of Stembert while the Torino Warriors beat Milano. In the final, the game between Torino and Pisa was a replay after a first game int he group stage (Pisa won it 3-0). This time, the game ended in a perfect draw and the Torino Warriors finally took the title thanks to a goal in the sudden death by Vicenç Prats against Daniele Bertelli. Int he individual tournament, Saverio Baru proved to be very strong nowadays as he beat Christophe Dheur in the semi and Daniele Bertelli in the final (2-1). Luca Zambello won the U15 and U12 sections while Laura Panza won the ladies tournament. In the veterans, France's Eric Naszalyi won the final against Lionel Abecassis (1-0).

From what we heard, the tournament was first class with quality pitches, a great venue, games announced on big screens and great prizes for the winners (trophies, champagne and prize-money). Well done to the organizers.
Full results are available from www.fistf.com
