7. About the italian championship for teams (from the FISTF forum) I am going to sketch a short outline of the Italian championship for teams, which closed on Sunday, April 27th, in Rome.

The championship is structured in four leagues or "series": serie A, B, C and D. The former three are organized on a national level and count 10 teams each, while serie D is organized on preliminary regional rounds, allowing the best 10 clubs to partecipate to a final round taking place with the upper leagues. In all leagues, all teams play against each other over two days. Serie A and B are played over two full, separate rounds (first round was played in Pisa this February), while serie C and D only have one round.

So in Rome we had forty teams competing for primacy, out of about fifty-five active in the country. The winner of serie A is the Italian champion; in all other cases the best club is promoted in the upper league and the worst demoted in the lower one. Teams ranked 2nd and 3rd will enter play-off and those ranked 8th and 9th enter play-out.

In serie A Black-and-Blue Pisa proved itself the wonderboy of 2007-2008 once again. After a number of modest results in previous years, when the team barely escaped demotion, this season Pisa has seen his best player (Daniele Bertelli) triumphing in the World Championship for individuals, and the club itself was able to carry the day both in the Italian Championship and the Champions League!

Unfortunately, the competition in serie A suffered some disruption due to the fact that Eagles Napoli – winner of the previous edition and widely held the best Italian team, relying on players such as Massimo Bolognino and Vasco Guimares – played the first day of the February round with three players only, since Antonio Mettivieri missed his plane and arrived from Belgium just in the evening.

Reggio Emilia conquered an excellent second place and Perugia – usually Napoli's main contestant to the title – got third. Bologna Tigers surmounted Stella Artois (Milan) by one point in the race for the fourth place and achieved partecipation to the next Champions League. Bari and Palermo were demoted in serie B.

In serie B CCT Roma effortlessy secured their return into the premier league, while the Warriors Torino – an old and renown club led by Paolo Finardi, world champion in the Italian Veteran team – were unexpectedly defeated by an upstart Ascoli in the play-off, and so missed their return in serie A for the second year in a row. In the nether regions of the competition Fiamme Azzurre (Blue Flames, Rome's third club) and Catania were demoted.

In serie C Florence – a strong and well-known team – was finally able to seize promotion together with Cosenza. Ferrara was beaten at play-off, while Bergamo, considered a likely winner, was unable to go beyond average results.

In serie D both Modena and Imperia were promoted, the latter after beating Lazio (the fourth Roman team) in the play-off. Real Maremma – a Tuscanian club with strong ties to Spain – proved the revelation team scoring just one point below.

On the whole it was a splendid weekend of fair competition and closely-fought agonism, pitting many of the world's best players against each other and offering an impressive display, which didn't go unnoticed in the Italian media. Let's hope this fact shall attract new people to the hobby and encourage the movement's further growth.

... after this, is anybody tempted to join an Italian team?

We had a record field of entrants including Janus Gersie from Germany. The final was contested between Janus and local player Clifford Graaff with Janus winning by 5 goals to nil. The sheer class and experience of Janus proved crucial and he deservedly captured the first GP of Johannesburg title in style. Thesemi finals saw Janus beating Sean Morgan

In winter 2009 there is going to be a big game-event in Finland where different tablegames arrange their championship-tournaments in the same time, in the same place. Tablefootball has been asked to be one of them.
The biggest game in the event is going to be table-icehockey, no doubt about that. Every male in Finland knows the game and almost every male in Finland has tried it in some point of his life. It is a game that is played in many clubs and workplaces. I'm sure that table-icehockey tournament will attract a lot of people who are interested in tablegames in general. If we decide to take part in this event, we could reach exactly the right people, who might would be interested in tablefootball too.
Here is one link so that you can see what is table icehockey:
http://www.ithf.info/stiga/ithf/index.aspx
Besides table icehochey (and probably table football) there is going to be present for instance table curling.

1. Bologna: the final results
208 players and 41 teams were present in Bologna. We already mentionned that Joseph Borg Bonaci (Malta) defeated Massimo Bolognino thanks to a goal in the sudden death (3-2) in the open final but here are some other results. Juan Noguera (Spain) won the U19 tournament while U12 player Diego Tagliaferri won the U15 section after a 5-2 victory over Andrea Manganello.
Paolo Finardi won the veterans and Valentina Bartolini won the ladies section. Emanuele Lo Cascio from Sicily won the U12 tournament. Finally, TSC Falcons Athens became the first greek team to win a Major for teams.

2. Grand Prix of Greece (report by Chris Aggelinas) Weekend 7-8 of June we had our annual grand prix. It was the first international event in Greece since the Europa cup (due to the well known punishment). It was the quietest tournament in Greecefor many years, played in a really nice and sportsmanship atmosphere. We used the very same place and tables as the Europa cup. Unfortunately we had just one foreign player Jaime Silva from Portugal, (the other one Foti Labi is considered half Greek), but we had very good numbers of players in all the categories.

In Under 15 (it could be easily an under 12 category) 17 players took part.
We choose the format of groups of 4 (as we did in all the categories, in order to give as many games as we could). Giannis Vlassopoulos (9 years
old) from Highlanders won the tournament beating in the final his club mate Dimitris Koulosousas.

In the veterans we also had 17 participations. The world champion Aggelos Tsakiris was once again the winner. The Athens Kickers player won in the final (3-1) Giorgos Zavos from Pireas Lions.

In the open 64 players competed for the trophy. The Greek star Nicos Beis
(Roligans) smashed everyone in his way to the final. Then he won the Falcon Dionisis Koutis with a score 1-0. These two players were in the same group in the beginning of the tournament (and the score was exactly the same 1-0) Dimos Tsombanidis (Roligans) and Jaime Silva (Athens Kickers) reached the semis.

In the teams 12 teams (included a "Profis" non competitive team) took part.
The two grat favourites Falcons and Roligans reached the final. Roligans (as last year) won again this time with a clear victory 3-1.

3. Open of Murcia
Carlos Flores (Bologna Tigers) won the Open of Murcia for the 4th time in his career after he defeated Emilio Richichi (Italy) 2-1 in the Open final.
The tournament was very interesting with a good turnout (24 players in Open
category) and the presence of six players from Gibraltar. The event was played in a shopping mall and it was therefore very interesting to see many spectators showing interest for the game. Other winners were Juan Noguera (U19), Juan Carlos Granados (Veterans), Carmen Valverde (Ladies) and the Real Murcia (teams).

4. Future of Reggio Calabria
For its first edition, the Future of Reggio Calabria (Italy) attracted 27 players from six clubs. Salvatore Randielle, 792th in the world rankings, defeated Alfredo Soria, 516th, in a close final (3-2). Ernesto Gentile won the U15 and U12 section while Bruno Bagnato managed to win the veterans category when scoring a golden goal in the final against Leonardo Colella.

5. Open of Vancouver
The 2nd Open of Vancouver in Canada had a poor turnout of 8 players but many interesting games took place. Mark Meihuizen finally won the Open final after defeating host player Warren Creighton on shots.

6. Welsh Championships
Results of the Welsh Championships held on 8th June 2008.
Open category (all 12 games) played: 1 PHIL DACEY 36 ; 2 COLIN LEWIS 20 ; 3 DAVID LAUDER 17 ; 4 MARTIN EVANS 15 ; 5 WILLIAM HOLLIDAY 12 ; 6 CARL THORNE
11 ; 7 MATHEW ROWLEY 8.

Veterans category (all 10 games) played: 1 TOM TAYLOR 23 ; 2 JOHN LAUDER 19 ; 3 GARETH THOMAS 17 ; 4 RICHARD KING 14 ; 5 DAVID SAMUEL 11 ; 6 SAM WHITING 0.

7. Predictions for the world cup
Predictions are now open at
http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/viewtopic. ... fistf#1884
Visit the FISTF forum and let us know your own predictions.

8. USA: Maricopa Cup round 4 (by Simon Hutchinson) Saturday June 7's Maricopa Cup fourth round was the best attended in this competition's three year history.  We had nine players present and four pitches giving us the opportunity to play 29 games in our allotted time.

Wayne Smith finished top of the table with six wins, Steve Tucker claimed the runners up spot with five wins and one draw, and Simon Hutchinson finished in third with five wins.

An honorable mention must go to Munir Merchant who only lost one game, losing to Dominic Hutchinson.  He drew with Wayne Smith, Kevin Nieman and Steve Tucker, who are all players ranked higher than him.

Edgar Flores, Ian Sayer and Jason Mitchell made their debuts in this competition.  Jason won his first game since he started playing Subbuteo again after a "20-odd year" hiatus.

1. FISTF World Cup in Vienna
The World Cup took place last week-end in Vienna, Austria. Competitors from
18 countries were present and players competed in six categories on both days. As every year, the level of the competition was very high in the open category even if some of the "big names" of the circuit (Bennett, Targui, Nastasi, Bonaci, Koutis, Beis, Guimaraes, Mifsud,...) were not present this time. The tournament itself was full of surprises and as always, details made de difference in many games. In the samei-finals, Eric Verhagen defeated Wolfgang Leitner 2-1 while Saverio Bari defeated Valéry Dejardin on shots. In the final, the "golden goal" was scored after a few minutes in the sudden death and Eric Verhagen won the world title for the very first time in his career.

In almost all categories, the number 1 players of the world rankings proved their skill. Not only Verhagen but also Juan Manuel Noguera (U19) and Bjorn Kegenbein (U15) dominated their categories. in the veterans, Martijn Bom managed to win his second title ever after beating Stefano De Francesco in the final. Finally, the biggest surprise of the week-end came from the ladies section when Michaela Scherbaum won the final on shots against current champion Françoise Guyot.

In a the promotional U12 world cup, Diego Tagliaferri proved he was the favorite as he won the tournament without any possible contestation. Diego and the Italian team also won the team tournament on sunday.

In the other team categories, Italy was supposed to be the top favorite after their poor number of titles on saturday. The "Squadra Azzurra" proved to be the best nation in the world of table football by winning the Open (against a performing team of Belgium), the Veterans (in a close final vs
Spain) and the U15 section (on goal-average vs the Netherlands). The spanish U19 side dominated their final vs Austria while France took the honors in the ladies section.

-> Individual results are available from www.tablesoccerworldcup.com

* Giorgos Dimakeas managed to join Salzburg right after he was out of the veterans tournament to support his national football team in their game vs Russia.

5. Eric verhagen's interview
Eric Verhagen has been interviewed by our colleagues from www.subbuteonews.com Don't miss it!

6. Demo in Washington, DC
D.C. United (www.dcunited.com) played the LA Galaxy (aka, WHOOPED the LA Galaxy and David Beckham) yesterday in front of a crowd of 35,000 here at RFK Stadium. Was a great game/day of soccer between that and the Euro Final. We also managed to get a little table soccer demonstration in and many thanks to the Cranston trio and Paul Eyes for not only coming to the game but also being able to help demo the game to hundreds of people passing by.

Perhaps Daniel and Paul can comment more on how it went but from what I heard there were tons of kids stopping by to watch them flick and even trying their hand at it. Lots of flyers handed out and even some people who used to play and didn't know that the game was still played. Hopefully we'll get some new players out of it.

The demo was set up right next to the D.C. United team store where SuperFooty sets are available for purchase and about 10 of them have been sold through the store since April which is great and hopefully more people will pick up the game either at the store of through TablesoccerUSA or WorldTableSoccer as advertised on the flyers.

Some pics of the demo can be seen here:

Lainaa7. Current list of suspended players (updated)
* From a decision of the FISTF Board of December 1, 2007, the following player is suspended for 1 year (till December 1, 2008) of all FISTF
competitions: Kostas Kechris (GRE).

Aika vakuuttava kaveri.  :?

Mattia Santini (U15), Vittorio Nicchi (veterans), Alberto Zanini (U12) and the team of SC Subbito Gol Ferrara were the other winners of the week-end.

3. Grand Prix and Open of Skien (Norway)
2 nice individual tournaments took place last week-end in Skien. On saturday, Jon Henning Bergane won the Grand Prix final after a close game against Anders Grorud (2-0). On Sunday, Lars Tore Myge won his first FISTF title ever after beating Anders Buhl Hansen (Denmark) on shots (1-1). In the U19 category, Christian Emil Christiansen (saturday) and Lukas Enevoldsen (sunday) shared the trophies after meeting twice in the finals.

4. England: Alan Cook takes the championship title at the Worcester River Plate Severn Club in the UK (by Tim Lovell) A twenty league fixtures season comes to a dramatic finale as club newcomer and England legend Alan Cook takes the championship trophy... but former holder Paul Shearman takes the honours in the Worcester club's cup competition, narrowly beating Alan in a nail biting final.
Club chairman Tim Lovell had this to say. "It's been an honour to have Alan join our club, his experience and skill has had a massive impact on us all... we have all played a better game and gained a real grasp of the FISTF rules under his stewardship this season. With players like Paul Shearman and Alan Cook in the club it is no surprise we are attracting other players from the Midlands for next season"
And two new players are now poised to join the club in September as Worcester River Plate Severn TFC continue to build their reputation as a dynamic and exciting force of table football in the UK.

1. Limassol Satellites
The first two FISTF tournaments in Cyprus took place on July 6 & 13. 8 players were taking part but many more showed interest for the game as many Cyrpriots are still playing with the old rules and didn't feel ready yet to compete with FISTF rules. Paul Andreas (Cardiff TFC) won both Satellites and become the first Cypriot to win FISTF tournaments. Thanks to these tournaments, local clubs are being developped in Famagusta and Nicosia and hopefully many more tournaments will be organized in the future. FISTF is very happy with the recent developments on the island and we hope that Cyprus will become a strong table football nations in the next few years.

2. Stembert Open

4. USA: Maricoba Cup round 5 (by Simon Hutchinson) The fifth round of this year's Maricopa Cup was played in Simi Valley, California, on Saturday 12 July.
Despite saying that luck was not with him Wayne Smith finished top of the table with four wins and one draw.  Second place Steve Tucker was the player who had held Smith to a goalless tie.  Simon Hutchinson finished in third place with three wins, beating the players who finished below him, and two defeats, losing to Tucker and Smith.  Kevin Nieman's victory in the last game of the day ensure that he would finish in fourth place and Munir Merchant finish in sixth.  Under 15 player Dominic Hutchinson finished in fifth place.
A full report, scores and the final table can be found on the Southern California Subbuteo Club's web site at http://socalsubbuteo.com

1. FISTF letter to the associations
A few weeks ago FISTF sent a questionary to all associations to ask a few questions about the need to organize a big meeting between the officials of the different national associations and the points to improve int he organisation of FISTF. Thossa Büsing (vice-president of FISTF) was in charge of collecting the answers. He sent us a report, which is as follows.

a) REPORT

Five out of 17 member nations and two out of eleven partner nations answered to the questionary. All in all only seven out of 28 questionaries were answered by the responsables of the FISTF member and partner nations.
Just a quarter.

It looks like FRANCE denied to answer it. On 4th of July FFFT-President LAURENT GARNIER asked FISTF Vice-President BÜSING surprising: "Why the board refuse to discuss around table with the nations?" He added some comments not to explain in more details and remarks his interest of the institution "he have create", to work in a democratic way and proposed a "big program" for a seminary.

A couple of days later a letter from ITALY written by FISCT President ENRICO CORSO reached the FISTF President COPPENOLLE. It contains only the request for a weekend meeting like in the questionary under point 1) is asked for. FISTF President COPPENOLLE asked for a list of points to discuss. No reply on this. Unfortunely ITALY missed to send answers to the questionary, too.

Answers by AUSTRIA and MONACO were advised, but they didn´t reach FISTF-Vice-President BÜSING.

Only five out of 28 nations adress the meeting in Brussels. The rest missed the chance to confirm the need of such a meeting.

Seven out of 28 nations agrees with the work of the current BoD. The rest missed the chance to comment displeasure.

Every contacted nation, the responsible persons had the chance to send in the answers right in time. They got a reminder as well. Probably the missing answers are caused of a low interest on international level or due to internal problems inside of the associations or the desinterest of their responsables. Perhaps not every responable takes the questionary as serious as it has to be. It is quite possible this is resulting out of the continously missing work of all FISTF General Secretaries over more than six years.

b) Recommendation

An urgent need for a special meeting in Brussels, asked in question 1, is indistinguishable. Nevertheless, in general such a meeting makes sense, due to the ideas collected under point 2. The light version of a special meeting in Brussels can be a change of views on a Friday Night at a Major Tournament in Mons or Amsterdam. It is desirable to place such a small meeting in 2009, latest in 2010.

The need of cooperation with FISTF BoD must be better transported to all responsables in FISTF Member- and Partner Nations.

The collected opinions under the points 2, 4 and 5 can be really helpful for the further work of the current FISTF BoD until 2010. It´s up to everyone in the Board to use it: the Communication Department, the Financal Department, the Marketing Department and the Sports Department. In any case the FISTF BoD is able to prepare an agenda for a however named meeting.

Finally, everyone who voted for a special meeting in Brussels (without a tournament on that weekend), shall still be motivated to bring in their talents and ideas to support the FISTF BoD and at least the whole community of Subbuteo Table Football Players.

c) The representatives of the member & partner nations received the full length version of the report.

2. FISTF Handbook
The FISTF Board is working on the last details for the new handbook. The file should be available for August 20 at the latest.

3. Stembert Open
The tournament website is now open at http://opendestembert.wifeo.com

4. Belfast Barbarians Subbuteo Club (by Kenneth Beggs) A successful season was completed with 13 players taking part in the 10th Ladder. Alistair Morrison topped the Swiss Ladder on goal difference, thanks to a last second goal by Stephen Rodgers against Kenny Beggs. Report & photos on http://www.nitfa.org.uk.
The club was pleased to welcome father & son, Nick & Kealan Pearson, who travelled all the way from Donegal, making a total of 27 players, ranging from Junior to Veteran agegroups, who have participated in the club during the course of the season. A tribute to the continual hard work by the organisers to develop the sport in Northern Ireland.
Robbie McMinn was also in attendance, displaying his range of teams and equipment for sale. See advertisement, also on http://www.nitfa.org.uk

7. USA: Maricopa cup 2008 (by Simon Hutchinson) The sixth round of the Maricopa Cup, played on August 16, saw the return of Greg Willey. Willey was a regular player in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The club lost touch with him after the end of Season 4 and start of Season
5 in 2006. It was a day when the newer players did very well with Munir Merchant finished in second place and Jason Mitchell in third, both players only lost one game.  Wayne Smith was undefeated (again) and finished in first place. You can read a full report and see all the results on the Southern California Subbuteo Club's website -> http://socalsubbuteo.com On August 23 the Southern California Subbuteo Club is hosting the Western States Open, the largest tournament in the western United States.

1. Europa Cup 2009
As a reminder, august 31 is the deadline for sending candidature files for the Europa Cup for clubs 2009. Candidatures should be sent to Heinz Eder at www.fistf.com soon. You can also ask me a copy (there is an english version and a french version) by e-mail.
The main changes are as follows:
1) page 14 - member nations and partner nations There is a better definition of which nations are member nations and what are the advantages of being a member nation.

2) page 20 & 21 - Licensing and Nationality of players
- the first thing is that every national association should read the chapter about "Licensing and Nationality of players" very carefully.
- the second point is very important as it means an important change for the team events. The additional point is:

m) For the purpose of club team competitions, a player will be considered a 'foreign player' if:
- He is licensed to play table football by another national association different than the one that licensed his club (in effect, if he does not have his domicile in the country where his club is headquartered); and
- He or she has a legal citizenship different from that of the country in which his club is headquartered and has been selected in the last five years to represent the national association of the state of which he or she has the legal citizenship in line with j).

3) page 23 - age categories
Yearly update

4) page 26 - Satellites, Challengers and Futures
- the minimum number of entrants is 6 instead of 8
- top clubs can play with their B-team (see new rules)

5) page 35 - Head referees
The sports Director appoints a head referee for all Majors and GP.

6) page 40+55+56 - fines
The fines have been raised

7) page 78 - Agenda
This is a new section

. Form 01 for the national associations
FISTF General Secretary Zach Walker sent the Form 01 to all national associations. We kindly ask each association to send us the form back with the general details of the association:
- names and addresses of the association's board members
- activity report of the association
- main national results of the past season
- list of clubs

4. FISTF on Facebook
Facebook is a growing social network and many subbuteo fans are already registered. Several groups were already dedicated to the beautiful game but on September 2, 2008 FISTF also launched their own group. More than 100 people already joined this group and many of them are people who didn't know about FISTF before. It looks like it will be a great tool to promote our international circuit of tournaments. Link: www.facebook.com

5. Congratulations
The FISTF Board would like to congratulate Didier Van Renterghem and Jennifer for their wedding. The ceremony took place in Brussels on August 23.

6. FISTF form 01
The FISTF Board has already received the form 01 from the following
nations: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Spain, France, germany, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, the Republic of Ireland, Monaco and Wales. The other national associations should send the form ASAP to Zach Walker at lennyfoster@gmail.com) is now the contact person of the American Subbuteo Association.

9. New from Finland (by Kari Hakkarainen) The finnish table football association will take part in a big tablegames event in Finland, which will take place on 17th and 18 of January 2009. The mainorganizer of the event is the finnish table icehockey federation. They have good sponsors, and so taking part in this event will not cost anything to us.

On 30th of August was decided the finnish championship with the finnish rules. The final was Mika Tuuri - Marko Tiikkaja *0-0. The winner, Tuuri lived several years in Italy, but is now back in Finland. On the third place was Janne Liesivaara, another player who made comeback after many years. He dominated the game in Finland in the 90's.

10. USA: Western States Open
The Southern California Subbuteo Club hosted the last American Subbuteo Association tournament of the season with the Western States Open.  The WSO is the Major competition for the western region of the USA.  Wayne Smith won the Open competition for the third time beating Steve Tucker in a thrilling match, scoring the winner with just seven second left in extra time.  Ian Sayer won his second Mary Jane tournament in a row defeating Dominic Hutchinson in the final.  Dominic had better luck in the Under 19 tournament beating Adam Carlson in the final.  A full report and the results can be found on the Southern California Subbuteo Club's website at http://socalsubbuteo.com

4. New book about subbuteo
Paul Willetts is happy to announce that his book "TEENAGE FLICKS: MEMORIES OF THE SUB-BEAUTIFUL GAME", will be due for publication in early November. It consists of a mixture of jokey Subbuteo photos that pastiche sports photography. These are interspersed by brief reminiscences of Subbuteo, provided by a varied selection of well-known people, including Graham Taylor, Stan Bowles, Alan Mullery, Des Lynam, Will Self, David Baddiel, Arthur Smith and Alastair Campbell. Each reminiscence is accompanied by a collage photo showing that person as a Subbuteo figure. The book will be available in England via most branches of Waterstone's and Borders, as well as amazon.co.uk.

Incidentally, the book's publisher, Dexter Haven, an imprint of a small company called Black Spring Press, will also be producing packs of Subbuteo Christmas cards that might amuse our members.
