Last night we discussed whether it was a goal if, from a save by the goalkeeper, the ball goes directly into the opposing player's goal (ie the goal of the person who took the shot). Vesa thought it would be a legitimate goal (ie an own goal), I thought that it would not be.

I've checked the rules, especially rule 7, and can't find anything to indicate that this is would be a goal. Rule 7.3 states:

7.3.   Own goal
7.3.1.   A player may score an own goal from anywhere on the pitch regardless of the playing figure's and the ball's position.
7.3.2.   However, the attacker may not score an own goal directly from a free-flick, corner-flick, flick-in, goal-flick or penalty-flick. A corner-flick shall be awarded to the opposing player instead. See rule 16.
7.3.3.   If the ball rebounds directly off the post or crossbar after a regular shot at the opponent's goal and passes the attacker's goalline, a goal-flick for the attacker shall be awarded. See rule 15.

I do not believe that a shot saved by a keeper counts as an own goal, as every touch by the keeper counts as a flick. Even a shot off the crossbar which does not touch the keeper is not an own goal, so I can't see how a save/flick/deflection by the defender's keeper would count as an own goal. But let me know if you find something to the contrary in the rules.....

Lainaus käyttäjältä: "Hönkki"Ok, I'll be there. I think it is time to unleash Eliot and let him play as much he is capable of.

Hopefully I can play 3 or maybe even 4 games on Thursday (time and tables permitting) and move things along. But Vesa is right - let's try to keep the games roughly even for all of us......

I have not used the C3 or C5 figures - sorry, can't comment on them from personal experience. I played against a couple of guys using I think the C3s in Milton Keynes, and they seemed to slide really well and have good touch up to the ball, though the latter may just be guys using them! No-one tried any curls against me that I recall with those figures, or indeed any others...

I would basically agree with Zinga's ratings of the Sureshot and the Advantage bases, though I would probably rate the Advantages as fair for curling rather than mediocre (though maybe that is just my brilliant skill ) and slightly better than Sureshots for ball control (but that may be because I am now more used to them). I used to think Sureshots were better for shooting (as they are slightly heavier and more stable), but I think that is mainly technique and also the type of shot.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks Vesa. This looks great for me.  We can also discuss it further next Thursday to see what days suit everyone best if any extra days are needed.

Cheers.

Monday I cannot make it. Wednesday not great - I am meant to be playing football but I could miss the game if Wednesday is best for everyone else. Thursday fine for me.

As I probably won't make it on Thursday either, I'll indicate here my vote in favour of goal difference to decide positions where players are on equal points. While I respect the views put by Vesa and have some sympathy for them, I prefer using goal difference for the reasons I gave previously, and i also agree with the points made by Zinga and Hönkki.

There is also an additional practical problem I thought of. What if three players ends the season on the same points, and Player A has beaten player B twice, Player B has beaten Player C twice but Player C has beaten Player A twice? What order would you put them in? Or would you then use goal difference?

In any case, I prefer goal difference as the best indication of performance over the whole season against all opponents.

Cheers.

Very interesting debate. I will go with any system - I really don't mind. Maybe I am old fashioned, but I think I still favour the goal difference method as I think it is a better test of a player's/team's consistency over the course of the whole season.

One can of course put arguments in favour of any system, inlcuding Ves's preferred one (which would be fine with me). But, for example, what if a player plays badly for just one match or has very bad luck against a player he is equal with on points, but is otherwise vastly superior on goal difference? You could argue he has therefore failed the most important test, but you could also argue he is being punished for one bad game or one game with lots of bad luck.....

But, I repeat, I will play with whatever system is agreed.  :)

Thanks Vesa - I will see how I go on Thursday, but it may not be possible. I am free again on Thursday 17 May by the way if that becomes another league night.

Thanks for suggesting 27 May too - that now suits me best as I actually have something on on 20 May I was not aware of (until my wife reminded me ). I am afraid my last two months are filling up fast.....but surely I cam bet through my 12 remaining games somehow!

Cheers from Luxembourg!

Lainaus käyttäjältä: "Zinga"I give my vote to goal difference as it is more natural for league type competitions. This gives some edge to our goal machine Kennedy, but no worries   But I actually do agree - goal difference is normal for a league and, if the goal difference is the same, then the team with more total goals scored would normally be ranked ahead. In other words, if two players had a +25 goal difference but one had scored 50 and the other 60, then the one with 60 would be ranked ahead.

This is maybe better for at the moment, but who knows?? There's a long way to go still :)

I will try to make it next Thursday 10.5, but it may be tricky as both my sons have football games that evening and I am also looking after a visitor from Australia who arrives on Wednesday.....life is so busy!

For the weekends Vesa mentioned, the only days I can really make it are Sunday 20.5 or Sunday 27.5, from the morning until about 3pm.

If I understood Hönkki's post correctly re table height, I understand from the FISTF website forum discussions that the generally agreed 'best' height for the boards is 80-85cm, although everyone has their own personal preference of course.

Unfortunately, I can't make it next Thursday as I have a football match I must play in that evening. I will also be away on Sunday 6 May (in Luxembourg).

Fortunately, after last night, I am up to 10 games now, but I will see if I can arrange to play Seppo at some other time.

Cheers.
